WHO WE ARE:
From the land of fire and ice, Moku o Keawe, Black Koa was created in 2014 as an action lifestyle brand for men and women. Native Hawaiian owned and ʻohana (family) operated, BK was established on the ideology that one should be strong, stay humble, and live pono (righteous and balanced). Today, BK continues to evolve as a brand with iconic designs, positive messaging, and limited editions.
Koa is the ancient Hawaiian name for warrior, while the color black is associated with the deity Lono, who was associated with fertility, agriculture, rainfall (hiwa [black] rain clouds), music, and peace. This positive energy and power is known as “Mana.” Accordingly, the name Black Koa refers to “Warriors of Mana” and pays homage to the ancient warriors of Kaʻu (Southern end of Moku o Keawe), who were recognized for their skills in battle, sense of justice, and love for ʻohana, homeland, and country, or in other words, STRENGTH and HONOR.
Historical Note: It is said that the People of Kaʻu came from a union between Lono and Pele. As such, the warriors of Kaʻu were not only noble, but also fierce and defiant.
A positive-energy, action-lifestyle Brand, Black Koa gear are for individuals who pursue excellence in all that they do, and do so with strength, honor, and integrity. As a Brand, BK reflects the energy of action lifestyles such as SURFING, MIXED MARTIAL ARTS, WORKING OUT, and being an ADVOCATE for positive change.
The values adhered to by Black Koa are simple: Aloha ke Akua, to love God, Aloha Kānaka, to love (all) People, Aloha ʻĀina, to love Homeland and Country, and Mālama ʻĀina, to care for the Land. These values are core to the establishment of BK and will guide its evolution forward as a Brand.
To be beacon of light in a sea of darkness – To grow as a brand and effectuate positive change at home and abroad.
To build a Brand, synonymous with quality, value, and good will, on a foundation of cultural competence, social responsibility, and being earth friendly (mālama ʻāina).
“Strength and Honor”
The spirit of this term has been embraced by warriors of the world throughout the ages. The strength of character, not only arm and flesh, and willingness to stand for one’s morals and beliefs regardless of the consequences.
Pono is the Hawaiian word for righteousness and a state of balance and harmony between body, mind, and spirit.
To “Live Pono” encompasses the BK ideology to Be Strong, Stay Humble, and Live Pono.

CULTURAL ICONS & SYMBOLS:
Black Koa creates designs that are culturally competent and consistent with its values and mission. Black Koa’s icons and symbols include, but are not limited to: The SKULL shape that represents our kūpuna (ancestors) and reminds us that our ancestors are with us and that we must honor them by our positive acts and deeds. The WINGS represent the ʻIo (Hawaiian Hawk), symbol for royalty and nobility, a reminder to always act with integrity. The CROWN represents the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi that was illegally overthrown in 1893, and reminds us to kūʻē (fight) the injustices of the world wherever we find it and to never give up. However, the kaona (deeper meaning) of the Crown is to remind us that we are all of royal and noble birth, with unlimited potential, as sons and daughters of ke Akua (God). The MALTESE CROSS has been a symbol of righteous strength and honor for over 900 years beginning with the Knights of Malta in 1070. The Maltese Cross became a prominent icon of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi with the establishment of the Royal Order of Kamehameha in 1865. The four arrowheads represent: Prudence, Temperance, Justice, and Fortitude, while the eight tips represent the virtues of: Truth, Faith, Repentance, Humility, Justice, Mercy, Commitment, and Endurance. Use of the Maltese Cross reminds us to be courageous yet humble, and to promote peace while standing ready to fight for justice.
Black Koa is proud to partner with 1% For The Planet, a coalition of over 1,200 companies in 48 countries who donate 1% of their sales to over 2,000 nonprofits all over the world. 1% For The Planet, has contributed over 150 million dollars over the past 15 years to support hundreds of environmental projects to help make this planet a greener and bluer place to live. BK also gives back closer to home, at the grassroots level, supporting advocates who take strategic steps to protect, preserve, and perpetuate Hawaiʻi’s cultural and environmental resources, see Giving Back.
Black Koa is committed to keep its ecological footprint as small as possible. BK recycles what it can and conserves energy where it can. Much of BK’s printing is done by hand using eco-friendly (biodegradable) inks when available. BK also uses natural fibers (100% cotton) at much as possible. In addition, BK surfboards are 100% natural, 100% biodegradable, and 100% safe for the environment, see Mālama ʻĀina.
